I have had the pleasure of reviewing more than one arrangement of this fabulous tune, Alfonso Montes comes to mind, and now have the pleasure of reviewing the daddy of them all. That's if one regards Roland Dyens in the term of "Daddy"; in this vernacular sense when it comes to "arranging" I would profess that he most surely is.
A little background to the piece: It is a dedication, written by the composer in 1939, to one of Argentina's most loved poets of the 20th century, Alfonsina Carolina Storni (1892-1938). She had by all accounts a fairly traumatic life, physically from cancer and emotionally from painful love affairs (surely grist to the mill for a poet). This culminated in her eventual suicide on 25th of October 1938, at La Perla Beach, Mar del Plata, where she walked into the ocean and drowned herself. A large
granite monument was erected in her honour there, four years later. Ramirez wrote the tune with lyrics by Felix Luna. No singing is involved in this arrangement.
Those familiar with Dyens's arrangements will expect a scordatura of some sort; Dyens doesn't disappoint here. This famous Libran never uses an alternative tuning for the sake of it; the B minor sound world of Alfonsina is intimately captured by having the low E tuned to D and the A string to B. The crisp ringing of the open B gives the music a steely clarity not felt in other arrangements. As usual Dyens gives precise instructions on how to avoid extraneous noises from string squeaks etc., which he quite obviously detests. The song is a zamba, a slow dance in 6/8 with a tricky break in the middle of a bar or phrase. This "click", percussively played on the 5th or 6th string or both, is so typical of the Argentine style of playing that it is essential to hear it played properly. Juan Falu and Jorge Cardoso are master exponents that should be listened to in this respect. The directions are extensive but not prohibitive. Those unfamiliar with Dyens's high standards will be presented with a challenge but follow these instructions and the rewards will be great. This, played weIl, would be a beautiful encore.
Congratulations to d'OZ for this production; exemplary in every way; a superior arrangement to all before it.

Alfonsina Carolina Storni, poetessa argentina, drammaturga e saggista è nata il 29 maggio 1892 a Sala Capriasca vicino a un villaggio della Svizzera Italiana a Lugano (Ticino Tessin!). E 'considerata oggi come una delle più importanti poetesse dell'America Latina.
Guidata dall'esperienza personale è con coraggio ha scritto sulla lotta individuale della donna nella società del suo tempo.
Nel mese di ottobre 1938 dopo diversi anni di ricorrenti sofferenze da cancro ed a causa di lunghe e dolorose storie d'amore,ha deciso di finire la sua tragica vita. Dopo aver affittato una stanza il 18 ottobre a Mar del Plata (a sud della provincia di Buenos Aires), ha scritto due giorni dopo,la sua ultima poesia: Voy un sonno (vado a dormire). Il 22 ottobre, invierà questa poesia al suo unico figlio e al famoso quotidiano argentino La Naciòn
Mentre il pubblico leggeva questa sua ultima poesia sulla stampa, Carolina Alfonsina Storni entrò in mare e annegò al largo della spiaggia di La Perla. Era la mattina del 25 ottobre.
Quattro anni dopo, non lontano dal luogo dove il mare inghiotti uno dei più grandi scrittori Argentini,un grande monumento in granito fu eretto alla sua memoria.

Alfonsina Carolina Storni, poète, dramaturge et essayiste argentine est née le 29 mai 1892 à Sala Capriasca, village voisin de Lugano en Suisse italienne (Tessin!Ticino). Elle est considérée à ce jour comme l'une des plus importantes poétesse d'Amérique Latine.
Guidée par son expérience persorinelle, c'est avec courage qu'elle écrivit sur le combat individuel des femmes dans la société de son époque.
Après plusieurs années de douloureuses histoires d'amour mélées à un cancer récurrent, elle décida, en octobre 1938, de mettre fin à ses jours. Après avoir loué une chambre, le 18 octobre à Mar del Plata (sud de la province de Buenos Aires), elle écrivit, deux jours plus tard, celui qui serait son dernier poème : Voy a dormir (je m'en vais dormir). Le 22 octobre, elle enverra conjointement ce poème à son fils unique et au célèbre quotidien argentin La Nacidn.
Alors que le public découvrait cet ultime poème dans la presse, Alfonsina Carolina Storni entra dans l'océan puis se noya au large de la plage de La Perla. C'était au petit matin du 25 octobre.
Quatre ans plus tard, non loin de l'endroit où la mer engloutit l'un des plus grands écrivains d'Argentine, un vaste monument de granit fut érigé à sa mémoire.
En 1939, Ariel Ramirez composa son chef d'wuvre Alfonsina y el mar sur des paroles de Felix Luna. Cette chanson ne tarda pas à devenir un hymne pour tous les Sud-Américains.

Alfonsina Carolina Storni, argentine poet,playwright, and essayist, was born on May 1892, in the village of Sala Capriasca Lugano in Southern Switzerland.
Alfonsina Storni is considered one of the most prominent Latin-American women poets of the twentieth century. Inspired by her own personal expèriences, she courageously wrote al the struggles of the individual woman in modern society.
In October 1938, after several years of suffering from recurring cancer and because of long and painful love affairs, she decided to her tragic life. On October 18th Alfonsina rented a room in Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires Province. On October 201h, she wrote what to be her final poem, Voy a dormir (I Am Going to Sleep) and, two days later, sent it to her o son and to the editorial office of the prestigious newspaper La Nacion.
In the early hours of October 251h, while the public read her last poem, Alfonsina Carolina Storni walked into the ocean at La Perla Beach and drowned herself.
Four years later, near the spot where the sea had swallowed one of Argentina's greatest female writers, a large granite monument was erected in her honor
In 1939 the composer Ariel Ramirez wrote his masterpiece, Alfonsina y el Mar (Alfonsina and the Sea) with lyrics by Felix Luna. Alfonsina y el Mar quickly became one of the most famous and celebrated South American songs.
