This second volume of Luis Milan's "Libro de musica de vihuela de mano" entitled "El Maestro (Valencia, 11536)" was originally a tablature collection containing both solo pieces written for the vihuela (a guitar-shaped instrument with six pairs of strings) as well as Italian, Spanish and Portuguese songs with vihuela accompaniment. The composer divided his book into two parts: the first featuring technically easier works, the second including more difficult pieces. This format has been retained in this edition, which presents every solo piece in the original collection in standard notation for the modern guitar with the 3rd string tuned to F#. In this transcription, all the rhythmic values have been reduced to half of their original values, while the barlines (whose meaning in the 16th century differed somewhat from that of today) have been left in their original positions. Besides taking polyphonic voice-leading into account, the editors have striven to create an easily readable score for modern guitarists. 100 pages. Overall Difficulty: Intermediate-Advanced.
