PREFAZIONE - PREFACE:
Not Bach (brook), but Meer (sea) should be his name. A-- BEETHOVEN
Study Bach: there you will find everything. A-- BRAHMS Now, there is something one can learn from! A-- MOZART
Let the Well-Tempered Clavier be your daily bread. Then you will certainly become a solid musician. A-- SCHUMANN
For the past eighty years I have started each day in the same manner. It is not a mechanical routine, but something essential to my daily life. I go to the piano and play two preludes and fugues of BachA... It is a sort of benediction on the houseA... Each day it is something new, fantastic, and unbelievable. That is Bach, like nature, a miracle! A-- PABLO CASALS
As many would concur, there really is no better way to begin the day than by playing Bach. From a daily immersion in the music of Bach, we can build and maintain a strong foundation. Moreover, for both our technical and musical development, there is nothing more satisfying or uplifting.
I have gathered these pieces, most of which appear here in flute arrangements for the first time, as a sequel to my earlier collection: Bach, 66 Pieces for Flute (IMC 3370). After opening with the monumental Ciaconna (originally for solo violin), I have again ordered the various selections in the form of an extended baroque suite, beginning with preludes and closing with gigues and allegros.
My primary source has been the Bach-Gesellschaft edition. Editorial markings have been kept to a minimum and placed in parentheses, while suggested tempo indications are brackets. Footnotes on each title page indicate sources and original keys. For study purposes, I have set these pieces in a wide range of major and minor keys.
Drawn from some of BachA's greatest and most challenging instrumental compositions, these arrangements are intended primarily for private study rather than public performances, although the Ciaconna and perhaps a handful of other selections might do well as concert fare in the hands of the more venturesome flute virtuosi.
May we, like Pablo Casals, find a lifetime of enrichment in the beauty, energy and inspirations of BachA's music.
