35 Selected Studies by Rodolphe Kreutzer, Phillipe Libon, Joseph Mayseder, Giovanni Battista Polledro, Ludwig Spohr and Pierre Rode (MARTIN, Thomas)
Prefazione: Luigi Rossi followed his teacher Andreoli as professor at the Milan conservatory in 1830. He is remembered for his scholastic works, which include a method for 3 stringed bass, a number of duets based on violin studies and this collection of transcriptions. They are advanced even by todayA's standards and, viewed historically, one can well see why the Milanese school produced so many fine players including Bottesini (who entered RossiA's class in 1835). Bottesini always spoke in glowing terms of his teacher throughout his life and dedicated his Three Grand Duets for two string basses to Rossi.
I am glad to see these important transcriptions by BottesiniA's famous teacher appear in print for us all to study, enjoy and gain from. One has to remember that when they were transcribed, the studies were not long in existence. Even now they present a challenge and only attest to the forward looking attitude and advanced thinking of Rossi in his time. The studies are progressive in the challenges they present and are well arranged.
I have respectfully added some fingering ideas but want to encourage the player to use these excellent studies to explore the many other ways around the problems presented. I have not used the double bracket usually used to denote an extended position leaving the use of pivots, extensions, or the 3rd finger to the individual.
