Based on a drama by Pushkin, Boris Godunov had its premiere at the Maryinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, over a century ago. Since then it has continued to enthrall generations of listeners with its unorthodox use of tonality, intense lyricism, and Moussorgsky’s gift for creating sharply realized individual characters and setting them, not in conventional plots, but in vivid cross-sections of the life of a whole
people. Moreover, the composer’s method of fusing arioso and recitative provided
Boris with a dramatic intensity unique among Moussorgsky’s operas.

The Rimsky-Koisakov version, prepared by that Russian master after Moussorgsky’s death and reproduced here in the authoritative Russian edition, is the most performed, recorded and studied version of the opera.
