La forza del destino In full score (Partitura) Verdi Giuseppe Opera in four acts Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave First performance : St.Petersburg, 10 November 1862
Early in 1861 Giuseppe Verdi was commissioned to write a work for the Court Opera in St. Petersburg, and chose as his subject a play first produced in Madrid in 1835: Don Alvaro, o La fuerza del sino, by Don Angelo Pérez de Saavedra, Duke of Rivas. From its story of ill-fated love, Verdi, with his librettist Francesco Maria Piave, created a dark and gripping musical drama that received a triumphal reception at its debut in 1862.
La Forza del Destino marked an important turning point in Verdi’s career. With it he felt be had created a new kind of opera “made with ideas” rather than “made of duets, cavatinas, etc.”—an approach he would continue in masterworks such as Don Carlo and Aida. The initial success of La Forza del Destino was confirmed by the enthusiastic reception accorded subsequent performances throughout Europe. It continues today to be among the most popular of Verdi’s works.
